James W. Thomas, M.D.
James W. Thomas, M.D. is a Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiologist, a member of the innovative subspecialty of Radiology that invented angioplasty and stent placement as well as uterine fibroid embolization. He is a member of Access Care Physicians and Interventional Associates, high quality private practice groups of Board Certified and sub-specialized Interventional Radiologists who practice throughout the Philadelphia area as well as throughout the United States.
Dr. Thomas is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. After completing Internship at Naval Hospital Oakland he received further training at the Naval Aerospace Medical Institute and served in the United States Navy as a Flight Surgeon. He completed his Radiology Residency at the University of Texas - Houston / MD Anderson Cancer Center and Fellowship in Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology at Georgetown University. At Georgetown he trained under the guidance of Dr. James Spies, one of the foremost authorities on uterine fibroid embolization in the nation.
Dr. Thomas served as Director of Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology at George Washington University Hospital in Washington, D.C. prior to his move to Philadelphia.
He is certified by the American Board of Radiology in Diagnostic Radiology with a Certificate of Additional Qualification in Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology. He has performed numerous successful uterine fibroid embolizations including one of, if not the first documented UFE prior to successful invitro fertilization. He has presented papers and posters at the Society of Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology as well as the Radiological Society of North America meetings. His practice includes a broad range of Cardiovascular and Interventional procedures including arterial and venous angioplasty and stent placement, thrombolysis, embolization and chemo-embolization, mediport and dialysis access, minimally invasive tubal occlusion / tubal ligation, varicocele embolization, varicose vein treatment, hepatic/ biliary and urologic interventional procedures, abscess drainages and percutaneous biopsies as well as non-invasive vascular imaging.
